SpaceX vs Rocket Lab: Launch Companies Compared
If you are interested in the SPCX IPO, Rocket Lab (RKLB) is the closest publicly traded comparison — a pure-play launch company you can already buy.
Quick comparison
| SpaceX (rumoured SPCX) | Rocket Lab (RKLB) | |
|---|---|---|
| Public? | Private (IPO rumoured) | Public on Nasdaq |
| Flagship rocket | Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Starship | Electron, Neutron (in development) |
| Payload class | Medium to super-heavy | Small to medium |
| Reusability | Proven (Falcon 9 boosters) | Developing |
| Extra business | Starlink satellite internet | Space systems & components |
How they differ
- Scale. SpaceX launches far more mass to orbit than any competitor and dominates commercial launch. Rocket Lab is a smaller, focused player that has carved out the small-satellite market.
- Diversification. SpaceX has Starlink, a massive recurring-revenue internet business. Rocket Lab earns revenue from launches and from building satellite components and systems for others.
- Reusability. SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 is a major cost advantage. Rocket Lab is working toward reusability and a larger rocket (Neutron).
What it means for investors
Rocket Lab gives investors a listed way to invest in the launch industry today. SPCX, if it lists, would be a much larger and more diversified business — but also potentially priced at a much higher valuation.
SPCX is not yet public. Mentioning RKLB is for comparison only and is not a recommendation.
